Program #25, October 19 2000: Unthemed.

I juxtaposed a variety of (initially, competing) imperatives in order to produce tonight's program. I wanted to set the stage for next week's Cacophonies program during the last hour, by laying the aural groundwork for an argument that the first piece we'll be hearing then -- Radulescu's Inner Time II -- should be thought of as ambient just as much as it can be thought of as cacophonous; I wanted to play some of the piano music that has been building up for a while waiting for me to play it; I wanted to play at least one of the pieces I've had to drop from previous programs because of time constraints; I wanted to preach the gospel of Radiohead by examining at least some material from their new album Kid A, if possible by framing it appropriately with other work.

As it turns out, I was able to do this more effectively than I thought I would, even right before airtime! We began with a Radiohead piece, moved on to cover a specific guitar work I've been wanting to play for a while (which nicely served the purpose of both highlighting and diminishing the "post-rock" aspects of the Radiohead piece), then crossed one item off the "previously dropped" list. From there, I segued into close to an hour's worth of piano work (some in combination with other instruments), then continued the segue (through Brian Eno and Aphex Twin) back to Radiohead. At that point, I moved back through Eno again to finish up with a series of more straightforwardly ambient works.
