Program #162, September 4 2003: Unthemed.Tonight, a first of sorts -- because KBCS has now filled up all 24 hours of the programming grid every day, for the first time Prisms was forced to end on time to make way for the next program! That's a happy responsibility, though -- always better to have intended material on the air rather than placeholder programming, even if the placeholder was the esteemed BBC World News -- and even better because the new program that follows Prisms, Morningside Electronics, looks to be a lot of fun, with a healthy dose of chillout-type electronic music that's probably just the thing for that time of night. To set the table for our newest addition to the KBCS family, I explored a variety of forms of electronic music, mostly (but not completely) somewhat more harsh/dissonant/classically oriented than you'll hear on ME -- I wanted to lay groundwork for the idea that there is a lot of common ground between all these forms, and that they have been (and are -- just ask DJ Spooky) in substantive dialogue for some time. I look forward to exploring this notion with the Morningside Electronics host soon. In the meantime, if you'd like a mix of electronic music from the Prisms end of the spectrum, you can do well to begin by (re-)exploring any of the pieces below on your own. |
